Summary:

A memorably bizarre screen version of Lewis Carroll's novel 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland'. The original story is followed reasonably faithfully, though those familiar with this director's other films won't be the least bit surprised by the numerous digressions into Svankmajer territory, living slabs of meat and all. As the opening narration says, it's a film made for children... perhaps?

Note : What would it look like if you decided to adapt a beloved, but kind of sinister and surrealist children's classic, but didn't care if it were appropriate for children? Well, if you're legendary Czech animator Jan Švankmajer, you'd use actual taxidermic animals for stop motion animation, and then later upgrade to just plain animal skeletons with little outfits, wigs, and googly eyes, have a single human child in the middle of off-putting, dark and sinister scenarios like being swallowed up by a writing desk (which does not seem at all to resemble a corvid), and just generally make every decision to make it as horrifying as possible. It's a masterpiece, though, no doubt about it, but it's also like having a bad trip in a Socialist modernist housing complex where the roof's in disrepair.

Alice is at home, and when a taxidermic white rabbit in a display case comes to life, she hides, then follows him as he gets dressed, retrieves a pair of scissors, and breaks out of the glass case. He leads him to a writing desk on top of a hill, where she crawls into the drawer after the rabbit, falls down an elevator shaft, and ends up in a large pile of leaves with a mind of its own. Inside the pile of leaves is another desk, which contains the key to a miniature door, however, to pass through, she must drink a dark liquid which transforms her into a tiny porcelain doll. She eats a pastry that makes her too large again, which makes her cry; her tears flood the room, and the white rabbit rows by on a boat, dropping a tray of tarts which return her to doll size, and, well, there are skeleton animals, a lizard stuffed with sawdust, caterpillars made of stockings but with human teeth, and so on. Just... watch it. I guess. If you like.

This hybrid remaster combines video from the Athanor release with audio from the BFI one, to make a quite good total package. I'm mostly a little bummed about the lack of a commentary track. Otherwise, it's all... good?

HeVK torrents always have lots of keywords. Try searching for “hevk surreal” for more film that might not make sense to the conscious, analytical mind, “hevk fantasy” for more fantastic tales, or “hevk 80s” for more from a decade where most of the world certainly wasn't doing anything like this.
