Kurosaki Ichigo non è mai stato un ragazzo normale. Sin da bambino ha avuto l'abilità di vedere spiriti e fantasmi, tanto da scambiarli per persone vere... Kuchiki Rukia è una shinigami (dio della morte) scesa in missione sulla terra per eliminare degli "hollows" (spiriti che hanno perso il loro cuore). Al suo arrivo sulla terrà incontrerà Ichigo con cui si ritroverà poi a dover combattere fianco a fianco contro un hollow. Durante la battaglia improvvisamente i poteri di shinigami di rukia vengono passati a Ichigo il quale, suo malgrado, si ritroverà a dover combattere contro l'hollow. Inizia così l'avventura dei due ragazzi, che dovranno combattere fianco a fianco per uccidere gli hollow che si aggirano per la città.
