what is a scally?
Common observations of what a scally is:
...wears sportswear (tracksuits, trainers, baseball caps)
...is in their teens or early twenties
...is usually working class or lower middle class
...loiters around in groups in town centres, not actually doing much
...is perhaps involved in petty crime (e.g. shop lifting, vandalism)
...if female, wears a lot of cheap gold jewellery
...if male, may have a shaved head or crew cut
The word actually derives from the word scallywag, meaning a person who was sharp and street wise, perhaps a small time thief. The evolution from scallywag to scally appears to have occurred around the mid-nineteen seventies and early eighties, and is widely associated with the Liverpool/Merseyside region of North West England.
There is no official dictionary definition of the word chav, but it is generally used to describe loutish young people exhibiting council estate chic. It is one of a whole variety of class-conscious labels to have emerged in recent years, alongside the adjective 'council', to describe anything working class and the equivalent of the American term 'trailer trash'.
The precise origin of chav is a matter of debate, but most people agree on its geography, namely that it probably originated in Chatham, Kent. It seems that the word itself began as a derogatory label for an older underclass, gypsies, many of whom have lived in that area for generations.
